media ethics

After watching the six videos, they all seem to have a common theme that is online and especially in advertising there are a lot of deceptions and propaganda used to sell a product. One idea I found interesting was that advertisers are not advertising the product, but they are advertising the idea of owning that product and the lifestyle that come with it, when the video was talking about this idea my first thought was cigarette companies and how the company Marlboro starting doing this in 1954 by using a cool cowboy smoking a cigarette to try to make man at the time feel as if they were to start smoking that they would also be like the cool cowboy. But in the video “How one man manipulated all of America (Edward Bernays)” I learned that this type advertising had been done by cigarette companies even before the Marlboro man, after the first world war ended a similar campaign had taken place to a greater extent that’s aim was to try to get women to start smoking. Unlike the Marlbo...

Revising writing

I enjoyed this rewriting experience as the feedback Christelle gave was very constructive and positive, and I enjoyed reading it and was delighted that she enjoyed reading my blog. She said it read very well and flowed nicely and said they only this she would mention for future reference is that I should add a link to the website of the competition or the organization that was running it, Christelle also asked what my thought process was while deciding it to compete in the competition and if I have competed in other similar design competitions. It thought these were great things to include in my rewrite of the blog as it let me discuss more about the research, I did to come up with the design and how I originally heard about the competition and got to enter it in the first place. For this rewrite of the blog, I did not change much from the original just fixed a few grammatical errors that I missed in the first draft but what I did go was add more detail about the design and gave more c...

Introduction to Garvan Hello, my name is Garvan Mc Quaid, I am nineteen years old and have been doing graphic design for the last 4 years as a side job to makes some extra money. The main program I use would photoshop, but I have used Adobe Illustrator and InDesign in the past for some projects that I have worked on. I mainly do promotional designs like business cards, flyers, logos, and booklets but have also designed many other things like hoodies, t-shirts and cycling gear. What made me want to pursue graphic design as a job was because in 2019 I entered a design competition for the LGBTI+ nation youth strategy welcome sticker,   this competition was open to everyone in Ireland that was under the age of 24 and there were over 4000 entries in the first stage , o nly 8 people were chosen to move onto the second and final stage. This was the first time I had entered a design competition and I didn’t expect to win, but I got invited to the second stage where they were going ...

digital media film production

Film Production  What is design thinking? Design thinking is a tool or mindset that will get you to think about all aspects of a design before you even start to create it, it makes you ask yourself who is this design aimed at and how can I target that audience in the best way. It's important to be aware of design thinking because not only will it make the project, you’re working in better but other designers will be using it too in a professional setting as in the video it is described a standard practice for digital designers. Design thinking seems useful for projects that you are not given a very clear brief, or you're not given a brief at all, and you get more freedom to create your own design, it also seems useful for advertisement designs or designs aimed at a certain demographic.   The process of making a film is called “production” this process is then broken down into three stages “pre-production, production and post-production”. Pre-production takes pace befor...

Cancel culture   The topic my group has chosen to discuss is online shaming and cancel culture, which is very relevant in today’s world of social media. The reason I wanted to do a project on cancel culture is because social media is more than a way to catch up with old friends or post holiday pictures, social media has evolved into a way to express your self online and nowadays, some people's first impression of you is the version of you that you portray online So, what is online shaming and cancel culture? To be “cancelled” is to shamed online which Is not anything new even before we had the internet we had tabloids newspapers that would report celebrity gossip and drama for people to read, the difference now with social media is people are not only reading the gossip and drama, but now they can get involved and some people like getting involved not because they care about the drama or gossip because they like cancelling celebrities this is what is creating today's cancel c...

My Experience Reading This Paper    I honestly had a hard time understanding this paper, as I am not used to reading academic papers whatsoever, so it was a new experience for me. I am also unfamiliar with the subject, which makes it very hard to comprehend and have no knowledge on the subject the paper was about, so it was hard to find any valuable information even after multiple reads. From what I could understand, the paper talked about what is the best way to retain information and how some people suggest that retention is automatic with comprehension while others suggest the retention is influenced by interactive  factors. Personally, I feel like it depends on the person but for me when I do interact learning or studying, I retain information better than if I was to just learn it off, I also feel like I retain and can information quicker and study for a longer period when I am doing interactive study.   I think this paper was primarily aimed at teachers and educ...
