The medium is the message
Video 1:
This video
talks about the different forms of media and how as it is now more accessible than
ever with digital media, but with this greater access to information also come
greater access to misinformation and how anyone can create content online and
make it look credible. There is multiple was to now check if information is true
websites such as Instagram have fact-checker check post and will give a warning
post they contain falls information whereas sites like YouTube will tell you if news
accounts are funded by the public or government run, and it will also tell you
which country is funding the account. If I see an article or piece of
information that I am interested in, I will google the headline and try to find multiple articles with the same information there are also websites that fact
check trending headlines to verify that the claims are legit.
Video 2:
The second
video talked about digital literacy in today’s society and how as technology improves
it is important to be able to use computers for not only work but for social reasons
too. As technology improves, we become more connected with people from all over
the world I have good friends that I met through online games or through a
friend online some of these friends I have never met in person as we don’t live
in the same county others I have met online and over time we met up in person
after I knew it was safe too. The internet combined with today’s technology has
made it easier to connect with people from all over the world and with
translators, as people don’t even have to speak the same language to talk to one
another.
Video 3:
I found the
third very interesting as it talked about how it is importing to consume “digital
litteratrices” and not just one source of digital literacy and how their
context dependent and need to be socially negotiated. The reason I found this interesting
was because I like to watch a lot of comedians and in today’s cancel culture a
lot of jokes that comedian’s day are taken out of context and twisted to push a
narrative that the comedian was not trying to portray. I fell like this happens
more to comedians than anyone else these days as “edgy” humour is one of the
post popular forms of humour for comedians, and it can be used as a tool to start
a discussion about topics that are relevant in our society today, but it can
just as easily be taken out of context a not used for the original purpose which
I believe is to start a discussion about difficult topics.
