What
made me want to pursue graphic design as a job was because in 2019 I entered a
design competition for the LGBTI+ nation youth strategy welcome sticker, this competition was open to everyone in
Ireland that was under the age of 24 and there were over 4000 entries in the
first stage, only
8 people were chosen to move onto the second and final stage. This was the first
time I had entered a design competition and I didn’t expect to win but I got
invited to the second stage where they were going to announce the winner and decided
to go with two of my friends. I ended up winning the competition and won a cash
prize and was presented with an award for excellence in design from Former Minister
for Children and Youth Affairs Katherine Zappone. A few months after the
competition I got the chance to sit with a professional design team called KICK
and I got to rework my design and add final details before it was finished. The goal of the LGBTI+ welcome sticker
competition was to display the values of the LGBTI+ Youth in a design and
create a sticker that promotes the inclusion of the LGBTI+ community. The
LGBTI+ National Youth Strategy was launched in 2018 by the department of
children and youth affairs and aims to ensure that all LGBTI+ young people are
visible, valued, and included in Ireland and it was an overall great experience
and inspired me to pursue graphic design as a career.

Hi Garvan first of all, i like to say how I really enjoyed reading your blog post. I think it reads very well and flowed very nicely.
ReplyDeleteLooking back at your post i would say my favourite part would be when you included a time line of when you started getting into graphic design to what you’ve been up to ever since, as I think it gives us an understanding of what you achieved during that time. I was able to grasp a sense of your skills based on the programs you mentioned.
I think it is great that you gave a clear and detailed explanation of the goal and meaning of the LGBTI+ welcome sticker competition. I also really loved the way you showed your cool design at the end giving it a personal touch.
The only thing I would like to mention for future reference is to probably leave a link to the website of the organization or something explaining the competition in more detail (if they have one).
I would like to ask what your thought process was while deciding to compete in such an important competition. And have you participated in any more competitions since then?
And finally, I would like to congratulate you on winning such a positive competition.

Hi Garvan. I really enjoyed your blog! I really enjoyed hearing about your past with graphic design. I think it’s great that you’ve taken something you enjoy and being able to support yourself from it. I found the story about the LGBTI+ design competition really interesting and inspiring, it’s amazing that you won out of that huge group of people! It’s great to hear how you first got into graphic design! I really like the logo you designed, I personally feel like it accomplishes all you need it to, it’s distinctly Irish while including LGBTI+ flags. I’d love to know what you do outside of graphic design though. What else are you looking forward to about this course? Why did you decide to choose Creative Digital media over a purely graphic design course? I’d like to get to know more about you outside of graphic design and your career. Are you looking to stay within the graphic design industry after graduation or are you looking to branch out into different segments of the digital media industries? All in all, I found your blog post really interesting, but I feel like you could tell us so much more about yourself! -Ella
