media compression
For this week’s blog, I have been asked to different watch
videos on media compression and to share my experience and what information I have
learned from these videos.
Media compression can be done to videos or images, it
is the process of making a file smaller without removing any of the content, This
is done by removing unimportant information within the file, so it can be
compressed.
There are only 4 different ways that the data size in
a video and photo can be compressed. The first way would be by lowering the
frames per second (FPS) in a video, for example, let’s say for every minute of
video you record is at 60 FPS, that means every minute has 60 pictures within
it and by lowering that to 30 FPS you could cut down on the file size with a noticeable
difference, but this can only be done so much before it becomes noticeable. From
the video showing examples of different frame rates is seems that anything
below 30 FPS looked choppy and unrealistic, most games nowadays run at 60-30 FPS
while movies are usually shot in 24 FPS
The second way is by adjusting what colours are in the
image, removing certain colours in an image can lower the file size.
The third way is by using inter-frame compression looks
at each frame and automatically removes information that is duplicated across multiple
frames. An example of a program that can do this handbrake.
The fourth form of compression is changing the sound
by levelling out the audio and removing high and low frequencies that are not noticeable
to the human ear, this can lower the file size.
There are many reasons for media compression, one
reason is if you must upload large images or long videos that you can’t make smaller
or shorted data compression allows changing the file size without making noticeable
changes. Some websites have an upload limit only allowing you to post pictures or
videos under a certain file size, this is another example of when data compression
can be useful
After watching these videos, I have a better
understanding of video compression. Before watching the videos and starting
this blog post I knew a bit about image and video compression from doing
graphic design work and editing videos and I had watched a great video on YouTube
that explained how bit rate worked which I have linked below.
