Starting Out
Cancel culture
The topic my group has chosen to discuss is online shaming
and cancel culture, which is very relevant in today’s world of social media. The
reason I wanted to do a project on cancel culture is because social media is
more than a way to catch up with old friends or post holiday pictures, social media
has evolved into a way to express your self online and nowadays, some people's
first impression of you is the version of you that you portray online So, what
is online shaming and cancel culture? To be “cancelled” is to shamed online which
Is not anything new even before we had the internet we had tabloids newspapers
that would report celebrity gossip and drama for people to read, the difference
now with social media is people are not only reading the gossip and drama, but now they can get involved and some people like getting involved not because
they care about the drama or gossip because they like cancelling celebrities this
is what is creating today's cancel culture. Cancel culture is also called "call
out" culture, as sometimes the person they want to cancel hasn’t done anything
wrong, recently people will find something from their past and call them out for
it.
The reason I interested in doing a project on online shaming
and cancel culture is because I like to watch a lot of comedians and YouTubers which
seem to be the main target for online shaming as it’s a lot to do with political
correctness or being (PC) and cancel culture is seen as a tool used by liberals
more than conservatives to try and silence opinions that they do not like.
Is cancel culture a good or bad thing?
It can be both most of the time when a person gets cancelled
it seems they just stay off social media for a week or two and wait for the news
to target someone else, but it can also cause a person to lose sponsorships, be
fired from their job and really destroy not only their career but also the rest
of their life making it hard for them to find a job as if your cancelled
online it’s all public information and anyone can see it. In my opinion it depends
on the context of what the person has done or said I don’t think you should be shamed
for expressing an opinion even if it is an unpopular one or one you know a lot of
people won’t agree with but if a person is sending threats or doing something inappropriate
or illegal then ye being shamed could be a good thing.
