media compression

Image
For this week’s blog, I have been asked to different watch videos on media compression and to share my experience and what information I have learned from these videos. Media compression can be done to videos or images, it is the process of making a file smaller without removing any of the content, This is done by removing unimportant information within the file, so it can be compressed. There are only 4 different ways that the data size in a video and photo can be compressed. The first way would be by lowering the frames per second (FPS) in a video, for example, let’s say for every minute of video you record is at 60 FPS, that means every minute has 60 pictures within it and by lowering that to 30 FPS you could cut down on the file size with a noticeable difference, but this can only be done so much before it becomes noticeable. From the video showing examples of different frame rates is seems that anything below 30 FPS looked choppy and unrealistic, most games nowadays run ...

Peer Review #2

For peer review, this week I was asked to give feedback on two different blogs instead of just one, both blogs I read were very well written, and I enjoyed reading both, this also made it harder to give feedback on them as there was not much too critic. The blogs that I gave feedback on had two very different themes, one blog discussed media ethics and the other was about cameras. The blogs also had two very different styles of writing, one blog was written as if it was being presented to an audience, while the other blog felt as the writer was speaking to just the reader. It was nice to see how other students’ blogs are written, and seeing their blogs helps me structure my and give me ideas on different ways I can approach writing my blog. I noticed as I was reading the blogs and giving my feedback on their blogs that there were many ways I could improve my blog, for example, the addition of an intro and outro to the blog makes it look a lot better. I feel like the peer review he...

technological evolution

Image
The videos for this week started with a timeline showing the evolution of technology over the last ten million years and ended by discussing how technology and media may influence our future. The first video starts by showing us the first tool made by humans which tool made from stone, wood, antlers, and bones and ends in the year 2020 with the invention of quantum computers. Even though the video starts off with an invention from ten million years ago, most of the significant advancements have only then placed over the last two thousand years. I noticed that there were a lot more technological advancements after the invention of the printing press, and the time between advancements also started to shorten, this was because as reading became more accessible to the public and as a result more people could be educated. The second and third videos are on the history of media literacy, and start by telling us that the term or field of media literacy only became a thing around the 1...

media literacy

I found the week 4 reading tasks a lot more manageable than the week 3 reading tasks as the first two opinion pieces really helped me, I found this to be a much better experience than the previous reading week as the opinion-based articles were much easier for me to understand. Some of the things I found interesting from the first opinion piece was some statistics were very surprising to me, I thought there would be a higher percentage of people would say that there was misleading information across the first month of the lockdown as this is when I remember seeing lots of false information on social media mainly and even people denying that the virus was real. Across the first month of the lock-down (48%) of northern Irish people reported seeing misleading information, and even though this is still a very high percentage of people, I thought it would have been higher.   After reading the second opinion-based article and comparing the surveys from last year in Northern Ireland...

This week my group as sat down, and we have decided which sub-topic we will each be talking about when discussing online shaming and cancel culture. The sub-topic I have chosen to talk about is people who have been cancelled and was it justified, for this topic I will mainly be focusing on celebrities who have been cancelled online and how they dealt with it and how it affected their career. Other subtopics we have chosen to discuss were what social media platforms does online shaming take place on and the effect of online shaming and cancel culture on people’s mental health. We haven’t decided how the script will be laid out yet, so we decided to each do our own sub-topic done first and figure it out after because at least then we will have most of the script done.   I have also taken on the role of editor for this project as I have experience in graphic design and video editing and it something I enjoy doing, I will also be teaching some of my group the basics of editin...

media ethics

Image
After watching the six videos, they all seem to have a common theme that is online and especially in advertising there are a lot of deceptions and propaganda used to sell a product. One idea I found interesting was that advertisers are not advertising the product, but they are advertising the idea of owning that product and the lifestyle that come with it, when the video was talking about this idea my first thought was cigarette companies and how the company Marlboro starting doing this in 1954 by using a cool cowboy smoking a cigarette to try to make man at the time feel as if they were to start smoking that they would also be like the cool cowboy. But in the video “How one man manipulated all of America (Edward Bernays)” I learned that this type advertising had been done by cigarette companies even before the Marlboro man, after the first world war ended a similar campaign had taken place to a greater extent that’s aim was to try to get women to start smoking. Unlike the Marlbo...

Revising writing

I enjoyed this rewriting experience as the feedback Christelle gave was very constructive and positive, and I enjoyed reading it and was delighted that she enjoyed reading my blog. She said it read very well and flowed nicely and said they only this she would mention for future reference is that I should add a link to the website of the competition or the organization that was running it, Christelle also asked what my thought process was while deciding it to compete in the competition and if I have competed in other similar design competitions. It thought these were great things to include in my rewrite of the blog as it let me discuss more about the research, I did to come up with the design and how I originally heard about the competition and got to enter it in the first place. For this rewrite of the blog, I did not change much from the original just fixed a few grammatical errors that I missed in the first draft but what I did go was add more detail about the design and gave more c...

Introduction to Garvan Hello, my name is Garvan Mc Quaid, I am nineteen years old and have been doing graphic design for the last 4 years as a side job to makes some extra money. The main program I use would photoshop, but I have used Adobe Illustrator and InDesign in the past for some projects that I have worked on. I mainly do promotional designs like business cards, flyers, logos, and booklets but have also designed many other things like hoodies, t-shirts and cycling gear. What made me want to pursue graphic design as a job was because in 2019 I entered a design competition for the LGBTI+ nation youth strategy welcome sticker,   this competition was open to everyone in Ireland that was under the age of 24 and there were over 4000 entries in the first stage , o nly 8 people were chosen to move onto the second and final stage. This was the first time I had entered a design competition and I didn’t expect to win, but I got invited to the second stage where they were going ...
